She learned most of her recipes from my great grandmother who traveled across the country in a covered wagon. Grandma died about twelve years ago and I assumed the recipe died with her.

About a year ago, my favorite Uncle Mike died, and as the family was sorting through his things they found a box full of recipes. It turns out that whenever my uncle stopped by to see his mom ( my grandma), he would ask her about some old recipes that she had memorized and he would write them down. He preserved a lot of family favorites that would have otherwise been lost. One of those favorites was Chocolate Gravy.

I took the time the other night to make this recipe and good lord was it sinful! You can dip biscuits in it or simply eat it like pudding. I'm posting the recipe here for posterity's sake.

CHOCOLATE GRAVY
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
3 tablespoons flour
pinch of salt
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Stir dry ingredients together. Mix in milk slowly. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick and smooth. Add butter and vanilla. Let cool for a few minutes, then serve. This recipe makes two bowls like the one in the photo.

It won't take long before the bowl looks like this.

Union commercial

I should point out that this has some language that will most likely get you into trouble at work. It was 1:30 a.m. and I was sitting at a stoplight. I sat there for fifteen seconds or so and BAM! I was rear ended and pushed out into the middle of an intersection. I was pretty dazed so I sat there for a few seconds. My glasses were thrown off of my face and I couldn't find them (they were later found in the back seat). After a half minute or so I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a blurry white car backing up. The car went around my left side and drove off up ahead of me. I squinted and strained trying to see their license plate, but I couldn't make it out. I'm blind as a bat without my glasses. As they drove by I heard a voice shouting at me out the window. It said "GET THAT BROKE F*CKER OFF THE ROAD, BITCH!" It wasn't one of humanity's finest moments.

I called 911 and waited at least a minute or more for someone to pick up the phone (Chuck D was right, 911 is a joke). It took the cops an hour and ten minutes to get to the scene. When they arrived they didn't even get out of the car. They told me to drive to a police station and fill out a report. I told them that I was from out of state and I had no idea where the closest police station was. They told me that there isn't a chance in hell of ever catching the person that fled the scene and that I shouldn't even report it unless I wanted to report a claim to my insurance company. Then they drove off. It was 3:30 am in Chicago. I got in my car and drove to Michigan.

My back and neck hurt like hell for the next few days. I'm feeling fine a week later. My rear passenger side door on my car no longer opens and the rear end looks like hell.

"Songs with Something to Say"

Billy Bragg was nice enough to give me a shout out in the Wall Street Journal this weekend. It's amazing what employers expect workers to do for so little money. This is a perfect example. After reading the listing I felt compelled to email the guy and find out more about the job.

................

transporting human remains
Reply to: job-653035116@craigslist.org
Date: 2008-04-23, 8:21AM

Applicants must live in the Madison/Inglewood area or around these areas. Please don't email about this if you live outside Davidson County. Our response time is crucial. Drivers will be loading and transporting human remains. Must be over 21 yrs of age due to insurance restrictions, able to lift 150+ pounds, valid drivers license and clean driving record. Drivers needed are for days or nights. Weekend work also available. Pay varies...drivers paid per call. If interested, email me with your name and number. Will get back to you as quick as I can. Thank you for your patience.

....................

Hello-
I live in East Nashville and am interested in this job. Give me a call and I'll tell you more about myself and you can tell me more about the job.
Thank you kindly
-Otis

..................

This job isn't for everyone.? We go on crime scenes and house calls. We are responsible for placing the body in the body bag and transporting to the Medical Examiner?or Funeral home.? This job does require someone that can lift 150+ lbs.??Most calls you will have another person helping you.? I am needing someone that can be on call for 24hrs and can go when called.? Time off is fine as long as we have?enough notice.? We provide the van that you will need for transporting.? You are paid per call and most calls don't go over an hour.? We do have a dress code that has to be followed - no blue jeans or?t-shirts.
?
Thanks

.................

I'm still interested and I understand why this might not be for everyone. You say that the pay varies, does this mean that some calls pay more than others or does this simply mean that some weeks you get more calls than others? How does the payroll work and what does the job pay? What's the lowest amount I should expect to be payed per call and what is the highest amount.
Thank ya kindly
-Otis

.................

Pay depends on how many calls you go on that week. In town (local) calls pay $12.50 for first hr then after that it goes over that first hr, pay moves to $8.00/hr...out of town calls pay $8.00/hr. Calls are based on how many deaths there are for the companies we contract with. Some weeks may be very busy, some may be slow. It comes and goes. Most of the guys now avg. $200-$400/wk - this is based on the number of calls that you want. Sometimes you may be where you can't go (eating dinner, etc.) so you can't take it. The more calls you take, the more money you make. Smile You are paid by check on Fridays we provide van and all needed supplies including gas for van. If still interested, let me know and I will get your number to the owner.

Thanks again.
Dennis

................

Thanks for sending that but in all honesty I was expecting this to pay better. If I understand correctly, I can expect to get a call at 3am, get out of bed and go load a dead body? Since most calls take an hour I can expect to make $12.50 for that? I'm truly not trying to be difficult but that's a lot to ask of someone for so little return. If I'm misunderstanding something please let me know.
Thank you for your time.
-Otis

UK tour photos!

Hello friends-
File this in the better late than never category. I learned a few things while touring the UK. Blood Pudding is nothing that a Hoosier needs to partake in, Crumpets are everything that this man needs when he can't find a biscuit, The Clash played their first gig at The Boardwalk in Sheffield and Americans have no business driving in England! Now on with the photos!

Angel of the North -just outside of Newcastle Upon Tyne

Statues -where The Tyne meets the North Sea

Scottish border -We hit a snow storm in Scotland that was no fun to drive through. did i mention that Americans should not be allowed to drive in the UK? I can't describe how cold we were standing there taking this photo. The wind was relentless. It felt like we were being mugged by a gang of snowmen.

More fun in the snow!

It was a great gig in Glasgow!

Freezing my ass off at Stonhenge.

My best buddy Todd with a shameless product endorsement.

I can't remember where this was taken but i think it was outside of Sheffield.

This is the photo that ended a long friendship. Todd was cussing and complaining about driving in the fog and on the opposite side of the road when he would rather be taking photos. I was leaning out the window when i took this not so great photo. He hasn't talked to me since.

The Cluny in Newcastle is about as good a gig as a fella could ask for. We walked up to her to say hello and she never shut up for the next hour. Literally! I marched in protest to the war before it started with a half a million people in Prague, a few hundred thousand in Vienna and with 18 people in Indianapolis but that lady stole one hour of my life that I'll never get back. Preaching to the converted or anyone else might be fun on the pulpit but it's a little tiring in the audience.

My new best friend in London

I'm a long way from Wanamaker.

Chicken coop outside of Gloucester.

Rainbows along the roadside.

The Musician in West Leicester.

I did some shows with Sam Baker on this trip. type='text'>

i've logged well over 10,000 miles in the last month. needless to say i've been having a hard time catching up on my sleep. my buddy todd and i spent five or six days in amsterdam. we enjoyed ourselves but i have to admit that it wasn't my favorite place that i've visited in europe. i think that i would enjoy living there much more than just visiting. it would be nice to live in such a liberal society. quite the contrast from indiana. the only problem was that everything is so damn expensive. i payed 12 dollars for an omelet. if we would have been there a few more days i may have run out of money :)

we hopped a flight to bucharest, romania for 16 or 17 days. the dollar is a whole lot stronger in romania. our friend radu drove us around and showed us the country and we had a fabulous time. romania is a beautiful country with so much to offer. the people are the friendliest people that i've met in europe. it remains undiscovered for the most part by tourist which makes it even more interesting. it seems unspoiled by the west. i've read that some people claim that romania has one foot in the past and the other in the future and it's pretty accurate. when you see horse carts sharing the roads with hummers it all starts making sense. i'll post some photos that i took in the next few days to give you a better feel for how the trip went

be sure and check out radus sight at www.outdoorholiday.com and tell him otis said hey ;)

greetings from milwaukee....
i played in st. louis night before
last and had a real good time....fred
(the owner) was one of the more
accommodating individuals that you are
likely to come accross....he's a true friend
to the touring musician...i knew that things
were gonna go well when he had a six pack
of fitz's root beer waiting for me when i
arrived....one of my hobbies is checking out
locally made root beer from whatever city
i might be playing in....fitz's is made in
st. louis and it's pretty good stuff

i'm sitting at the bremen cafe in milwaukee
right a
sucker for a feta cheese omelet!!!

i'll be playing a fundraiser tonight for
russ feingold....he is the only senator that had
the guts to vote against the patriot act....he's
the only one that had the common sense to
insist that maybe the senate should be
able to read the patriot act before voting
on it...sounds like common sense to me

<img width='1' height='1' walking through bizarro world...i
could get used to hangin out in
nashville...the show at the station inn
went great...i met lots of new folks
and had the pleasure of having ken
coomer sit in on drums...he played on
my latest record....it would have
made more sense for us to play the
songs that he recorded...but we
decided it would be more fun to
throw him a curveball...he hit it
out...we played "daughter of a truck
drivin man" with him to close the
set....i remember lookin off to the
side and thinkin to myself "wow!!
...that guy looks a lot like steve
earle"....it was him...it's not every
day that steve earle comes to a fellas
show..he said some nice stuff to me
afterwards and then we bitched
about bush for a short while....it
was very nice to say the least

i played a show the next day at
the basement...talk about a great
venue for acoustic music....it's very
small and very dark....the sound
was great and the crowd was into
it...very intimate setting....i was
part of a party put on by eric
babcock of catamount....eric was
the founder of checkered past
and bloodshot records and he's a
very cool guy....it was really nice
of type='text'>

greetings from louisville, kentucky
...i played a hank sr. tribute
at the exit inn last night in nashville....it was a show
put on by billy block...billy is one cool ass mofo....he
really knows how to throw a party and make
everyone there feel like they are the most important
part of the evening...he's also a damn fine drummer
and i was lucky enough to play a couple of songs with
him...it was a nice way to start a hectic week

i had a fellow walk up to me last night...he asked if i
remembered him and i had a hard time placing his
face...he said his name was mark miller and i
immediately remembered him....he was in a band
called the ex husbands back in the nineties...i met
him in 94 or 95 at a party in austin, texas...we
chatted on the phone off and on trying to work out
the logistics of playin a show together but it never
happened....mark is now doing his own thing in
nashville...he must have one hell of a memory
and he's an awful swell guy to hang with

we stayed out way too late chatting at a bar next
to the exit inn....i don't remember what the place
was called but it was nice and quiet...it was a good
place to sit and chat with friends...billy block and
andy moore seem to know more about
indianapolis' jazz heritage than most hoosiers...for
shame

i got up at six am this morning and headed to
louisville...i had to be on air at wfpk at 11am...mike
kenney was cool enough to drive me up here on his
way back to Indy (mike met nick Lowe last night so
his head was in the stars)...I made it with only a
couple of minutes left to spare and the on air
thing went well...My buddy Charles spoof came by
and picked me up and took me over to his place so
that I could chill out for a while...He's the fellow that
set everything up today...Yah gotta love charles he's
good people and he gets stuff done...i'm doing an in
store at a cool indie record store called ear-extacy
at 6pm and then i have to head over to air devils at
9pm and do a show...too much stuff for one day?...no
way...gotta take your swings when ya can

i just found out that the silos are in town tonight but
i'm doubtful that i'll be able to make it...i dig me
some silos

i'll be heading back to nashville in the morning...looks
like a busy weekend for me

my buddy todd and I have this hobby….we like to visit the graves of
people who seem interesting to us….i did an on air thingy at whhp in
farmer city illinois a week or so ago and we figured while we were in
the area we may as well visit the grave of edgar lee masters in petersburg
….he was a poet and is most famous for writing “the spoon river
anthologies”…when we pulled up there was a cat sitting on his grave…it
looked like the cat hadn’t eaten in a while and it was obviously a stray…it’s
scrawny and flea bitten…..i walked around the graveyard for about an hour
and the cat never left my side…it followed me around like a little puppy….we
figured that we better feed it so we drove back into town and bought some
cat food and brought it back to the graveyard…when I got out of the car the cat
took off running towards me from about twenty yards away….it inhaled the food
like it hadn’t eaten in a week…that’s about the time that todd and I broke
down and took the damn thing home with us….it’s one of the best cats I’ve
ever been around…it sits on my lap every time I sit down and sleeps under
my beard at night…I was going to try to find a home for it but amy and I fell
in love with it…it’s stuck with us :)….i wanted to name it edgar but it’s a girl…then
I wanted to name it emily (sparks) (from masters poem) but we are still
Undecided…any ideas?

<img width='1' height='1' great hangin with the
fellas in BR549....they are some of the more genuine musicians that i've
met in quite a well....i'm really enjoying their new line up...they had me wanting to
dance and i'm no dancer

i walked across the street after my soundcheck to the evening muse and saw richard
buckner soundchecking....i said howdy and stopped back by after my show and
caught his last two songs....i wish i could've caught more

i did an on air thingy at whay in whitley city ky a day or so later...they have been
really good to us and we are thankful for it....they have a big signal...i was able to hear them
for fifty miles or so on my way north...they played a song called "hey john ashcroft" by
a band that i think is called "american ambulance"....very fun stuff....the song is straight
up rock-n-roll and i'm a sucker for that

<img width='1' height='1'
